Automation readiness scorecard

Think of one process you want to automate. Answer ten questions about it. You get a score, the areas that need work and links to what to read or use next. Nothing you choose is stored on a server.

Question 1

Process clarity · 1 of 10

Could you write the task as numbered steps that two different people would carry out the same way?

Question 2

Process clarity · 2 of 10

Do the rules and steps stay the same from one run to the next?

Question 3

Inputs and systems · 3 of 10

Does the input always arrive in the same place and format, such as a form, a system or one inbox?

Question 4

Inputs and systems · 4 of 10

Can the systems involved be connected by an integration, an API or a regular export?

Question 5

Volume and value · 5 of 10

How often is the task done?

Question 6

Volume and value · 6 of 10

Do you know how long it takes today, measured rather than guessed?

Question 7

Risk and control · 7 of 10

If it goes wrong, can the mistake be caught and undone before it reaches a customer or a payment?

Question 8

Risk and control · 8 of 10

Is there a point where a person approves the risky steps?

Question 9

Ownership and monitoring · 9 of 10

Will one named person own the process after it goes live?

Question 10

Ownership and monitoring · 10 of 10

Will someone be alerted when it fails and review how it is doing on a schedule?

How the score works

There are five areas, each with two questions: process clarity, inputs and systems, volume and value, risk and control, and ownership and monitoring. Each answer is worth 0, 1 or 2 points, so the total is out of 20 and is shown out of 100.

If the risk and control area scores 1 or less, the result is held at "Partly ready" however high the total is, because a well-documented process that cannot be undone is still a risky thing to automate.

This is a self-assessment built from common operating practice. It is a conversation starter, not a prediction of results. To size the benefit, use the automation ROI calculator.
